The day I smiled again

The day I smiled again

The day we are born, we spread smiles all over,

Our tiny fingers clasped around an unknown world.

Wonder-filled eyes free of shadows,

Before we found out about sadness, we entered as light.

Over time, we lose sight of that charm, exchanging ease for masquerade and laughter for quiet.

Behind shining faces, we carried storms.

We learnt to blush solely using our lips rather than our eyes.

Most days were full of unspoken suffering, while nights whispered truths we tried to ignore.

We become strangers to ourselves.

Searching for our past selves.

However, healing returns in a subtle manner, akin to sunlight softly penetrating the night.

It doesn’t demand, it doesn’t rush.

It holds off until we’re prepared to experience the light.

Then one day, without even attempting,

A little pause, genuine and gentle.

A sincere, unforced smile appears.

The day I grinned once more,

It was like getting to know myself again.

Neither the child I was nor the person I grew into,

But someone more powerful, yet genuine.

Because smiles are concealed deep rather than lost,

Beneath the burden of everything we’ve experienced.

When they come back, they do more than just stop by; they serve as a reminder that we have grown and survived.
